Deep Varacouzo
Kwame Chivers also known as Deep Varacouzo was the last of 8 children. Born in 1979 in London, UK. It was an uncomplicated birth but there were unforeseen complications and infant Deep was very ill. To the point that the doctors did not think that he would make it to his first year. By 6 months, he was critically ill. But by 7 months, he made a miraculous recovery and was on his way to being a healthy baby boy. His mother was married to his father well before he was born, but his father was a violent alcoholic so the marriage was never destined to last long.
Growing up in multicultural London, he succumbed to the lure of street life and dropped out of school. Things spiralled out of control, so his mother sent him to New York in the hope of wisening him up to the world and also to get him off of the streets. While there his life changed. Hip Hop was nothing new to him as he was already a fan. But he had never experienced the culture behind the music. By being exposed to that culture and embracing it, he fell in love with Hip Hop. Gaining a greater understanding of what it was and how it affected him, and people around him. He soon found himself chilling out with his cousins listening to them freestyle. They encouraged him to rap and later taught him how to structure his rhymes.
Fast-forward a couple of years - a few more trips to New York and Deep managed to fine tune hence perfect his art. Also he started to produce music. By then, he was known in his local area as a hot rapper. Deep started to do open mic shows, freestyle competitions, anything to get on stage whenever he could. His hunger led him to a youth centre that was running a music scheme. Here, they showed him how to utilise the music equipment enabling him to record a demo.
Another rapper/producer was also on the scene, he was known as Kidco. Kidco was the founder of a crew called Tribel that was made up of rappers, producers and hustlers from London. Due to their common interest, Kidco and Deep quickly became good friends, and over time Deep became a part of Tribel. Over the next couple of years, Tribel did everything that they could in order to break into the music industry. As well as trying to live, trying to keep the crew together amidst arguments and members going in and out of jail. Kid was tragically murdered and Tribel were thrown into a period of mourning. At that point, Deep drew a line in the sand, and realised that he had to make a decision if he was going to do this, he had to give everything he had!!
This is his life - Deep Varacouzo
