Jill Scott

Jill Scott was born and raised in north Philadelphia in 1972. She was not a child that grew up with dreams of becoming a singer. Infact, jill was not at first drawn to singing at all, rather poetry. She performed in various poetry events and began to make a name for herself on the Philly poetry scene. It was not until Amir, who is the drummer for the Roots heard her perform and invited her to join the band in the studio. The result of this colaboration was "You Got Me" which reached the top 40 of the popular music charts.
From here, Jill had several colaborations with notable music stars of the time, such as Eric Benet, Will Smith and Common. Around this time Jill also began a tour of Canada in a production of the Musical "Rent". Jill had now truly made a name for herself, known for nice vocals and a poetic, melodic flow which was both refreshing and unique, she was quickly signed to The newly formed Hidden Beach Records. In July, 2000 Jill released her debut album, "Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1"
This album was a massive success and spawned such classics as, "A Long Walk", which later earned jill a Grammy nomination. The album went Platinum and Jill was now established as a fresh new talent. Jill has continued to go from strengh to strengh, bringing some much needed depth to the plastic music business that seems to flourish. Offering soulful, sultry lyrics and flows which just encourage you to look at things from a slightly different angle than you otherwise might have. Not only is Jill a great artist, she is also known to show her fans lots of love. I have heard personal accounts from people who have been to her concerts and managed to speak to her personally, this after having seens her tour bus in the cold west country night and simply waving at her.
What a lady!
Jill is often likened to Erikah Badu and many other Neo Soul artists, this is unfair, she is far better than most!
