Angie Stone

Angie Stone was born in Columbia, South Carolina, U.S.A.
She was introduced to music in the same way as a lot of great singers are, via Gospel at her local Baptist church. Singing was in her blood though, her father was a member of a local Gospel quartet and used to take the young Angie to see other Gospel artists.
Angie was said to have a keen interest in poetry as a youngster, this perhaps lent itself to her future career as a singer. She is know for her great vocals and great manipulation of words.
Angie began working a series of dead end jobs, all the while saving money to record her own demo's at a local studio. Next Angie joined a rap group. The group consisted of Angie, Gwendolyn Chisolm and Cheryl Cook. they recorded tracks for Sugarhill Records, which was one of the biggest Urban labels of the time. The trio recorded a serious of hits,l relatively speaking.
More work followed, Angie did vocals for artists such as Mantronix and Lennie Kravitz but also joined a new band, "Vertical Hold", where she was the lead singer. This group bought Angie more success even if it was somewhat limited (the track reached number 82 in the national R&B chart. More success followed when the group released an album 'Seems You're Much Too Busy' which hit number 17 on the R&B charts during the summer of 1993.
In 1996 Angie linked up with a cousin of Lennie Kravitz, whom she had previously worked with. Lennie's cousin, Gerry Deveaux bought Angie into his circle and made her part of his "Devoux Project". Angie provided great vocals on several tracks such as "Let It Go" and "Tonight". Later, in 1999 to be precise, a lot of the work Angie had done with Gerry Devaux was released on a compilation CD titled, "Soul Degrees-The Music Of Gerry Devaux". The CD received critical acclaim, if not the mainstream success it perhaps deserved.
Angie then went solo and released her debut album, "Black Diamond" towards the end of 1999. This LP was packed with classics, a lot of which you will have heard but probably do not even realize it is Angie. This album was/is/will be a classic and featured such smashes as, "No More Rain (In This Cloud)". The title for this track was actually taken from a response her father used to give her when she asked him for money. The album featured lots of stars from the industry all desperate to work with Angie, such as Lenny Kravitz, Aaron Lyles, Dj U-Neek and her ex boyfriend, D'Angelo, to name but a few.
Angie was now an established star and had fellow artists knocking at her door for collaborations.
Angie kept herself very busy, doing sound tracks and covers amongst other things. Angie then signed to J records and in 2001 she released her second album, "Mahogany Soul". Many producers had a hand in this work, including Prince, Raphael Saadiq and Rufus Black.
Featuring such great tracks as "I Wish I Didn't Miss You Anymore" and the anthem that is "Brotha". Brotha also received the remix treatment and featured The wonderful Alicia Keys and Eve. The remix was quite good but there is not bettering perfection and the original has to be regarded as a classic, as does the lady herself.
